The Details

The Product

An advanced and interactive demonstration unit built to showcase the simplicity and adaptability of Cisco's revolutionary UCS X-Series Modular System.

The Challenge

Cisco's UCS X-Series networking system promised to be the next generation of computing. However, their product's power, innovation, and versatility were challenging to convey at tradeshow or presentation events due to portability issues and space limitations. In order to get the most out of their marketing, sales, and networking efforts, Cisco would need a scaled-down model equipped with demonstration features and compelling UX and UI.

The Process

Speck Design's multi-disciplinary team of engineers, industrial design, and experience designers created a ¾ scaled-down version of the system's chassis and components to address portability and size constraints. With the understanding that the unit would need to draw and hold attention while also educating, they chose to showcase the platform's modularity by allowing users to remove certain system elements, such as a fan, module, power supply module, and two different blade assemblies. They further infused the unit with interactive features in the form of two touchscreens. The first is a side screen to showcase an inside view of the system. The second is a main screen to feature infographics of the system's hardware and software capability. The main screen also synced to the removable components to display pertinent information about them when touched.

The Outcome

Through portability and interactivity, the Cisco display model became a highly effective way to showcase the next-generative technology while elevating the user experience. This combination has allowed Cisco to easily and efficiently transport and set up the unit for any presentation mode or location. In addition, Speck Design's advanced, user-centric design has allowed Cisco the flexibility and interest generation needed to engage future customers and showcase the full potential of their UCS X-Series as well as their ever-growing array of software applications.

The scaled-down device was first showcased at the company's yearly event, Cisco Live, and continues to be an invaluable tool for educating and inspiring interest.
