The Challenge

TurnCare came to Speck Design looking to improve the design of the controller element of their 1st gen profusion enhancement system. The enhancer pad itself was not in the project's scope, but the handle, hook, clamp, connector lock, and cord were. This meant one of the most significant overall challenges was the sheer number of decisions the client would need to make to successfully adapt the entire connecting and controlling systems to smaller and lighter ones while adding more features.

The Process

The team began the project by meeting with TurnCare stakeholders to understand the vision, priorities, and goals for the Guardian System and its key target audiences. They completed competitor analysis to discover what products that occupy a similar space in the healthcare market were doing right. They used these insights to discuss the key benefits of the Guardian System product through a B2B and end-consumer lens. By creating a decision matrix, our team was able to provide numerous concepts to TurnCare throughout an iterative process using CAD and physical and digital renderings. These concepts were then narrowed down, and the optimal one was selected to be revised with all features outlined by TurnCare.

The Outcome

The Guardian System II exceeded expectations by demonstrating seriously impressive outcomes, including an 81% reduction in sacral hospital-acquired pressure injuries with high-risk acute care inpatients. It was deployed in the fight against COVID-19 and utilized as a widespread intervention throughout multiple existing and newly constructed COVID-19 Intensive Care Units (ICUs) on highly contagious, critically ill ventilated patients. Guardian Systems were both pre-deployed on ICU beds and placed on patients, allowing immediate pressure injury prevention therapy upon admission, reducing clinical effort, risk, and care team exposure. This timely and successful utilization led to it receiving the critical care product of the year award in 2020. The attachment technology concepts refined by Speck Design continue to give clinicians more flexible care options for dealing with high-acuity patients while reducing adverse events.
