The Details

In the industrial design phase for the Rainin pipettes, our primary focus was on ergonomics and user comfort, essential for devices used extensively daily. Our design team, understanding the varied demographics of pipette users, developed a universal yet nuanced ergonomic design. The challenge was to cater to both right and left-handed users and those with different hand sizes. We incorporated a visually distinctive design language that resonated with Rainin’s brand identity. Using injection-molded plastic allowed us to achieve a design that was not only ergonomically superior but also visually appealing. This approach helped offset the increased costs due to the clamshell design, maintaining cost-effectiveness while enhancing the product’s perceived value and quality.

Mechanical Engineering

High-tech engineering
Our mechanical engineering efforts aimed to develop a robust and ergonomic pipette, integrating advanced medical technologies.
Details

The mechanical engineering challenge in redesigning Rainin’s pipettes involved integrating advanced medical technologies into an ergonomic and cost-effective design. We needed to reimagine the internal assembly to accommodate the new technologies while ensuring the pipettes remained easy to use and durable. The clamshell design presented unique challenges in terms of manufacturability and cost. Our team worked meticulously to refine the internal mechanism, ensuring a smooth, reliable operation that complemented the ergonomic design. The result was an innovative mechanical solution that elevated the functionality and usability of the pipettes without compromising on cost-effectiveness.

Extensive user research guided our design, focusing on ergonomic solutions for a diverse range of users.
Details

In our user research phase, we delved deep into the daily usage patterns and challenges faced by pipette users. Our findings revealed that pipettes are often used repetitively throughout the day, frequently by women with smaller hands. This insight was crucial in shaping our ergonomic design strategy. We aimed to create a pipette that was comfortable for all hand sizes, focusing on reducing fatigue and strain during prolonged use. Our research-driven design approach led to a product that not only met the functional requirements but also provided a comfortable and user-friendly experience, regardless of hand size or dexterity.
