Speck Design collaborated with Nivolab to develop an educational tool for the cancer drugs Opdivo and Yervoy. This project aimed to create an intuitive, comforting tool for doctors to explain complex medical interactions to patients, simplifying high-level concepts while maintaining the necessary depth of information.
The design strategy for the Opdivo + Yervoy educational tool involved in-depth research into the patient experience and doctor-patient communication dynamics. Recognizing the sensitive nature of cancer treatment discussions, we aimed to create a tool that was not only informative but also reassuring for patients. Our strategy incorporated elements of educational psychology, focusing on visual and tactile learning methods. This approach helped us design a tool that conveyed the intricate workings of the cancer drugs in an accessible and comforting way. Our collaboration with both medical professionals and patients ensured that the tool addressed the real-world needs and concerns of its users, making complex medical information more digestible and less intimidating.

The industrial design and engineering phases of the Opdivo + Yervoy tool focused on creating a tactile and visual educational device. Drawing inspiration from the shape of T cells and the Novolab brand, we developed a design that was both intuitive and aesthetically pleasing. The engineering process involved meticulous planning to ensure that the device accurately represented the medical processes involved in cancer treatment. Attention to detail was paramount, as the tool needed to be durable, easy to handle, and visually engaging. Our engineering expertise was instrumental in creating a device that was not only a powerful educational tool but also a comforting presence for patients during consultations.
The NPI & Product Fulfillment stage was crucial in bringing the Opdivo + Yervoy tool from concept to reality. We meticulously planned the manufacturing process, focusing on cost-effectiveness without compromising on quality. Our team selected manufacturing partners who aligned with Nivolab's requirements and oversaw the entire production process, implementing stringent quality control checks. This phase also involved managing the final assembly and last-mile shipping, ensuring that the completed units were delivered efficiently and in perfect condition. Our hands-on approach in this phase was key to delivering a high-quality educational tool within the desired budget and timeframe.
